NOAA 200th Celebration Event in BoulderIn 2007, NOAA is celebrating 200 years of science, service, and stewardship, commemorating the 200th year since President Thomas Jefferson ordered a Survey of the Coasts in 1807. Each month this year, at least one celebration event has been held throughout the country. On Nov. 9, 2007, NOAA in Boulder will celebrate and commemorate NOAA science, from its beginnings in the early explorations of our hemisphere, through its evolution as a preeminent science agency, and forward to its future role in the understanding and prediction of the Earth system. The day's activities include:
Ceremony to Dedicate Geodetic MarkerThe geodetic marker will already be set, but will be officially dedicated at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 9 to kick-off the day's activities. In addition to NOAA leadership, including Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere Tim Keeney, Boulder Mayor Mark Ruzzin and other local dignitaries will contribute to the dedication. The community is invited to the ceremony. Science ShowcaseThe community of Boulder and surrounding area are invited to join NOAA for activities and demonstrations. A Science Showcase - "Getting to Know NOAA across Time, Space, and Diverse Disciplines" will illustrate NOAA's roots in Earth system science, highlight what we are doing today in understanding and predicting the Earth system, and point to future directions of research. Teacher Tour and In-ServiceTeachers attending the National Science Teachers Association regional conference in Denver will be invited to tour Science Showcase, as well as participate in a training with a retired master teacher who is helping develop a booklet and a CD with selected classroom activities that emphasize the Earth System and NOAA's broad-ranging science around the aspects of that system. The booklet/CD will be the main product that results from the day's event and will be a valuable resource for NOAA outreach in the coming years. |
